Quick Release Roof Mount

king0

We have a KING portable satellite antenna for our Unity, it works very well. Simply plug it in and it finds the satellites, no compass, tripod, level, signal meter, etc are required. The only downside was where to store it when not in use or when traveling?

Fortunately KING has a Quick Release Roof Mount which provided us the option of converting our portable satellite to a roof-mounted satellite antenna. The quick-release mechanism makes mounting and dismounting the antenna quick and easy. Now when not in use, or sometimes in use, its safely mounted out of the way.

Our Unity CB came with a coax jack on the roof, wired to the front AV cabinet. This makes a great spot to mount the antenna as the roof coax gland was right by the ladder. When roof reception is not an option, it quickly removes from the mount and you can place it on the ground somewhere where it can see the sky. When in portable mode we plug the dish into the utility bay coax jack, which also runs to the front AV cabinet.

Basic STEPS

King recommends Selecting an area on the roof using the following criteria, which the existing roof coax jack archived, but your Unity model may be different, so be sure to check.

  • Make sure you have enough room to mount the antenna unit.
  • The antenna unit should be mounted on the center line of the vehicle, and not tilted more than 2 degrees in any direction.
  • There must be no line-of-sight obstructions. Air conditioning units, other antennas, and storage areas that are too close to the antenna unit may prevent the satellite signal from reaching the antenna unit. They provide specific distances and heights of roof obstacles to avoid.
  • Mount the antenna unit with the handle towards the rear of the vehicle

I contacted LTV prior to installing our roof mount. LTV recommended butyl tape between roof and dish mount, 1” screws and self leveling sealant (Dicor) over the screws and plate. They will send you a drawing of your roof if requested, which is a help if you are concerned about drilling into any existing wiring etc. Attached is an example.
